Design Trend Or Design Fad?

The April Furniture Market in High Point North Carolina has come and gone, but the effects of new products and trends are trickling into mainstream as we speak. The twice yearly High Point Market, is much like New York Fashion Week is to the fashion industry. Each manufacturer reinvents their showroom from top to bottom displaying not only their newest products and collections, but also putting their best foot forward, sparking trends and infusing creativity into the interior design world.

But not every trend is for every person.
Certainly you cannot ignore trends, but how do you pick and choose which to follow so your home (and style) stays current, but most importantly true to yourself?

Market Trend: Bold Geometric Patterns

Our first glimpse of the bold patterns were many years ago when IKAT filtered into the design scene. Since then bold patterns have ruled the scene and are still going strong. This year the trend has morphed into geometric patterns. I love a bold pattern just as much as any trend setter does, but rest assured, I will also tire of it quickly. Let yourself enjoy the trend with pillows, throws or even an ottoman. When a new trend arrives you can easily replace the old and bring in the new, without all the guilt of an expensive room redo.

Market Trend: Upholstered Casegoods

Make a bold statement with these creative pieces, they will be sure to start conversations at your next party. But don’t let them rule the room. Use them in stand alone spaces where they can have a powerful impact, but be moved or replaced at a later date. The perfect example is an entryway, usually one piece of furniture occupies this space and it’s the first impression you give visitors.

Market Trend: Wallpaper

If I were to recommend a trend to embrace, this might be the one. Wallpaper adds character, dimension, pattern, color and texture to a space. If your on a budget, wallpaper a single wall within a space, or make a statement in a small powder room. When you tire of it, just take it down and put something new on the walls. If you choose the right pattern and colors, you’ll be happy with the results for many years.

Market Trend: Gold

Here’s a trend I can actually see sticking around for quite sometime! Why? Brushed nickel and silver have been the go-to finish for hardware and fixtures for the last decade or more. With the new neutral being a cooler grey, gold is the perfect warm contrast. But don’t think in terms of the polished brass of the 1980’s, this gold is refined and sophisticated.

Don’t just follow a trend because it’s the latest and greatest. You will barely finish a room before the next round of latest and greatest products are introduced. An interior designer will be able to guide you in finding your true sense of style while keeping you current and modern within your comfort zone.

Stick to your true sense of style and have fun here and there with accents and accessories. But don’t shy away from the trends either, this is how the design world evolves so be sure to keep an eye on whats new, just give your senses a little time to soak it all in before deciding if it’s right for you.

“Amy spent a lot of time getting to know us, our style and comfort level. We felt that we could totally trust that she would design something that was unique to our family, and she did just that.”
