Fall interior design tips

Fall is finally here! Even though it might not seem like it in Southern California, fall is the opportune season to give your home a refresh. You don’t have to do a household overhaul to bring the spirit of the seasonal shift into your home. A few quick swaps and thoughtfully-selected accents can leave you and your home interior feeling festive and ready to host guests, carve pumpkins, bake pumpkin seeds, and go apple picking!

Summer Swaps

Fall interior design tips

To give your interiors a dramatic transition start by swapping out your summer accessories with fall substitutes. Instead of light, airy blankets and linens, opt for thicker alternatives. Look for fabrics with a richer texture or heavier weaves. For more inspiration, read this post on the most durable fabrics for your home. Pillows are another easy-to-update item, buy one or two new pillow covers and store the old ones away until spring rolls around. This will make your home feel fresh and updated without completely redecorating.

You can bring the outdoors inside by incorporating seasonal plants. Visit the South Pasadena Farmers Market or your local market for fall plants and fresh flowers that you can use in any room of your home. The other thing I love about fall is that you can go beyond foliage. Decorate with gourds and pumpkins for a similar effect, they will even last longer than fresh flowers.  For a modern look, use all white pumpkins across your mantel or down the center of your dining table.

If live plants aren’t your thing, look for a high-quality faux options.  We prefer succulents as they look the most realistic, and of course require not one drop of maintenance.  There are also several indoor plants that are very easy to take care of even if you don’t have a green thumb.  One of my favorite flowers are Alstroemeria (see them on the coffee table above).  Buy a few bunches at the grocery store, cut them to the right height and enjoy them for 1-2 weeks.  You just need to give them fresh water every few days.

Decorate for Warmth

As the seasons change, daylight starts to dwindle, but what’s cozier than ambient lighting? Decorate your interior with elements of warmth like candles and amber lighting. If you have overhead lighting or a chandelier in your dining room, accent with branches and twigs to create a nature-friendly atmosphere and a fun lighting enhancement.

Use Rich Colors

For a drastic fall transition, incorporate seasonal colors. Deep rich colors like green, navy, and burgundy are fall favorites, but oranges, purples, and blush tones can create a similar effect. Do away with your fresh whites and opt for off-white tones this time of year.

Seasonal Scents

For finishing touches, make your home smell like autumn! Fall scents like pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, sandalwood, orange, rosemary, frankincense, and ginger can be found in candles or diffusers. Nothing quite says welcome home like the aromatic coziness of the fall season!
